DNV: The advisor to the entire hydrogen economy, from production to end use.
The world is heading for hydrogen, and for many, a large-scale hydrogen economy is essential to a clean energy future.
From production to consumption, the business case for hydrogen is growing and the hydrogen economy is emerging, yet to fully realize the potential, industry and governments must focus on four key areas to scale the hydrogen economy:
Safety – DNV carries out safety analysis of hydrogen applications, experiments to obtain knowledge about consequences for full-scale incidents, and offers technical solutions to determine time- and cost-optimal solutions. We set and check requirements for safe and reliable design, construction, and use of hydrogen, deliver risk studies, and develop and support regulatory documentation.
Infrastructure – DNV offers deep insight into technologies and policies enabling transport, storage and delivery of hydrogen. Through our technical knowledge, system understanding, and software expertise, we can enable safe and fast deployment of hydrogen and other low emission energy technologies at large scales.
We advise on transport and distribution – by shipping, road rail, and pipelines – for all forms of hydrogen-carriers, and on safe storage. We also support infrastructure related to specific uses, such as use hydrogen for heating in homes and businesses, and for use as a fuel in the maritime industry.
Decarbonizing production – Green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis from renewables, is commonly regarded as the ultimate destination, but blue hydrogen, produced from natural gas or coal with carbon capture and storage (CCS), will be key to scaling the hydrogen economy.
Indeed, the majority of energy professionals believe that both green and blue hydrogen need to work in synergy to scale the hydrogen economy successfully.
DNV has expertise across all aspects of production, transport, storage, and consumption of green hydrogen from renewable sources.
Policy, investment and strategy – DNV assists in the development of the policy and regulatory environment needed to make hydrogen a practical solution. In parallel, DNV helps companies to understand the policy landscape and provides insights into the technical and business aspects of hydrogen.
DNV delivers broad technical expertise and experience to enable hydrogen to play a key role in the energy transition. Together with industry and governments, we are helping to change the timeline from hydrogen on the horizon to hydrogen in homes, businesses, and transport systems.
