With a background in petrochemicals (at Sasol) and nearly two decades experience of working with hydrogen, Martin Hanton joined TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory in 2018 to spearhead the diversification of the organisation beyond oil and gas. As a result, the organisation now has teams dedicated to clean fuels (hydrogen, ammonia, CCS), the water industry, life sciences & healthcare, and digital services & AI.
The focus for hydrogen and CCS is how accurate measurement, combined with standards and regulation, is a key enabler of a hydrogen economy, given that the majority of fiscal and financial transactions for these energy vectors will be based upon an accurate, traceable measurement of flow rate. Martin recently took up leadership of a new Green Energy and Sustainability (GES) business unit within TUV SUD UK, which will offer testing, inspection and certification services across the hydrogen supply chain, including hydrogen certification under CertifHy and CMS 70.
Dr Martin Hanton holds BSc and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University of Leicester, and an MBA from the Open University with a specialisation in technology management. He is a Chartered Chemist, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry having been recipient of the RSC's 2011 'Young Industrialist' award, in part for his central role in the development and commercialisation of a new commodity chemical process, selective ethylene tetramerisation.
